The semester fee entitles you to make use of more than 7,500 student lodgings and apartments, Norway's largest student bookshop, a fitness centre, cafes and café-bars, health services specially for students, free advice service, free career guidance and inexpensive child day-care places.
Along with the semester fee, NOK 30 is also paid to SAIH (Norwegian Students' and Academics' International Assistance Fund). It is the highest student body at the institution that determines if that institution is to have such a scheme and how it is to be arranged. The 'tenner' scheme as currently organised is authorised under §10 and §12 of the Act relating to student welfare organisations. The SAIH amount is refundable. More information about SAIH and the SAIH 'tenners' reimbursement form are available here.
Refund of semester fee paid to SiO
It is not SiO itself that directly receives payment of the semester fee, but the individual institution. Applications for refund of the semester fee should therefore be addressed to the institution.
PS: SiO and OAS merged on 1 January 2011. Former students from OAS pay the NOK 380 semester fee to OAS during the spring 2011 semester, but use of the offers from the new welfare organisation, SiO.
